Piracy of S.S. "Hsin Wah".

Mr. M. P. Jansen, Master of the S.S. "Hsin Vah",

1359 net tonnage, reported at 21.00 hours on 16th April, 1928, that his ship had been captured by pirates on 14th April, 1928, on the way from Shanghai to Hong Kong.

The ship belongs to the China ier chants Steam Navigation Company, and flies the Chinese flag. She left Shanghai at 15.15 hours on 12th April, 1928, with a general cargo of about 300 tons (including 15 cases of silk) and carrying about 300 deck passengers.

At about 07.00 hours on the 14th April the master heard shouting on the deck and got up from his bunk and went to the door of his cabin where he was confronted by 2 men armed with automatic pistols which they pointed at him. They then made him go up to the bridge, where he found the Chief Officer Mr. Ligis stand- ing with his hands above his head covered by 2 pirates Tho had short fire-arms. Dy signs the master was given to understand that the pirates wanted him to hand over the ship's arms. The arms consisted of 6 revolvers and 6 Greener guns and about 500 rounds of ammunition. The arms and ammunition were handed over by the Chief Officer. The master was then taken to the engine room, and from there to the Chief Engineer's cabin. The Engineer was taken from his cabin and put into the master's cabin where he remained until the pirates left the ship. The master was then told that the ship
